Frederick William Bailey was born in Wicken on 21st January 1922 (Newmarket Q1-1922 3B:810), son of George Butler and Eliza Sarah BAILEY (née BAILEY) of Afterway, Wicken.

In the 1939 register the family were at Afterway, Stretham Road, Wicken, Frederick was a farm labourer, as was his father George [23-12-1871]; mother Eliza [25-11-1876]; brothers Joshua [6-4-1909] a farm labourer and Wilfred K [24-11-1916] a cowman. There is one closed record.


At the time of his death the 1st Grenadier Guards were part of 5th Guards Armoured Brigade at Stade in Germany, just before reverting to Infantry. It has so far prove impossible to locate exactly where they were, but certainly in the Hamburg area. The battalion lost 5 men killed on 29th April 1945.

Originally buried near Zeven (roughly half way between Bremen and Hamburg. with three other Grenadiers, he was re-interred in Becklingen on 2nd July 1946.
